Classical Kids Live & Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras present
    Saint-Georges’ Sword & Bow

The performance is approximately 50 minutes in length and is recommended for audiences age six and up.

No classical composer has possessed anything close to Bologne’s extraordinary range of talents, electrifying public persona, and fascinating personality. For centuries, Saint-Georges has been regarded as an archetypal romantic hero.

A contemporary of Mozart’s (over whom Mozart was reportedly sick with jealousy) and widely considered to be the first known classical composer of African heritage, Joseph Bologne took the 18th century French music scene by storm with his virtuosic violin skills and his prowess with a conductor’s baton. An unparalleled fencer as well (connoisseurs of the art form at the time regarded him as the greatest swordsman in Europe), Bologne put his music career on hold to join the French Revolutionary war efforts, and in 1791 he was appointed the colonel of the newly created Légion Franche de Cavalerie des Américains that was comprised mostly of men of color. The tour de force of artist, athlete, and man of action is certainly unique in the history of music. We are thrilled to bring the brilliance of Joseph Bologne to a new generation of adventurers!

The brand new Classical Kids LIVE! show features fifteen of Bologne’s compositions (including L’ament anonyme Overture;  Symphony No 1 en sol majeur, Violin Concerto in A Major,  Symphonie No. 2 en ré majeur,  and Concerto pour violin no 9 en sol majeur, as well as several guest-appearances from other composers of the era (including Orefeo ed Euridice by Gluck, Trio in F Major by Gossec, Symphony No. 85, “La Reine” by Haydn and Flute Quartet in D by Mozart.)

Whether this is your first introduction to Le Chevalier or you’ve loved him for years, Saint-Georges’ Sword & Bow is sure to delight, excite, and inspire you to dream big.
