Welcome to the 39th Annual American Spanish Dance and Music Festival, presented by the Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater, in residence at Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) and founded by artistic director, Dame Libby Komaiko. This must-see event features 40 leading dancers, singers, musicians and guest artists who bring the magic of Spain to Chicago through their exciting fusion of traditional, classical, folkloric, Flamenco, and dramatic theatrical productions. The festival also presents a comprehensive series of 57 master classes and workshops.
Experience this season’s exciting world premiere, SUR, choreographed by Raquel Gomez, former principal and assistant artistic director of the National Ballet of Spain, featuring the full company of the Ensemble Espanol Spanish Dance theater. Ms. Gomez’s fusion work of Escuela Bolera (Spanish ballet) and contemporary Flamenco is set to the exotic rhythms of Spain’s’ Flamenco Jazz master Pianist, David Dorantes.
And, don’t miss Dame Libby’s critically acclaimed masterwork, TIEMPOS DE GOYA, an homage to the grand artist Francisco de Goya, set to the romantic music of Enrique Granados, (Goyescas and Fandango de Candil), Beethoven’s dramatic symphonies #9 & 11 and the gypsy sounds of the Flamenco Nanas choreographed by former First Dancer, Juan Ramon. World premiere works with this year’s stellar guest cast from Spain and the U.S. along with musicians Paco Fonta, Flamenco singer and guitarist, David Chiriboga, Flamenco guitarist, Patricia “La Tiranta’, Flamenco singer, and Javier Saume Mazzei, percussionist will round up this year’s exciting festival.
